Description:
On May 29, 1919, a total solar eclipse helped to prove Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Einstein's theory suggested that gravity could bend light by curving the fabric of spacetime. To prove it, he thought it would be a great idea to look at background stars that appear very close to the sun. This isn't possible without a total solar eclipse, because the sun is way too bright. During totality, the sun is completely covered by the moon, which makes it possible to see stars that are usually invisible during the daytime. According to relativity, the stars would appear to be in slightly different locations in the sky. Einstein was planning to test his theory during a total solar eclipse on August 21, 1914, but World War I broke out less than a month before and ruined his plans. For another total solar eclipse in 1919, the British astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington organized two similar expeditions to Africa and Brazil. During totality, they mapped the positions of the stars near the sun to see if they appeared to have shifted. The difference in the stars' positions was tiny, but it was just enough to finally prove Einstein's theory.

On May 27, 2009, three astronauts launched to the International Space Station to complete the crew of Expedition 20.

Expedition 20 was the first six-person crew to live and work at the space station for a long-duration stay. Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk and Belgian astronaut Frank De Winne lifted off on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Two days later, they arrived at the space station, where they were greeted by the Russian commander Gennady Padalka, NASA astronaut Michael Barratt and Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata. For the first time in ISS history, the space station was packed to its full capacity of six crewmembers. Previous Expedition crews consisted of three people. But ever since Expedition 20, the space station has continued to support crews of six. Because the Soyuz capsules that ferry people to and from the ISS can only fit three people, only half of each Expedition crew can launch at a time. This is why it too two launches to get the full crew of Expedition 20 to the space station.

On May 31, 1990, the Soviet Union launched a new module to the Mir space station.

The new component was named Kristall, and it was the third addition sent to Mir since the core module launched in 1986. Including the core module, Mir consisted of seven different modules. Each of them launched individually on Russian Proton rockets, with the exception of one that went up on the space shuttle Atlantis in 1995. Mir was the world's first modular space station to be assembled in orbit. Kristall was 45 feet long and weighed about 20 tons. The module consisted of two main sections. One section was dedicated to experiments with materials science and biotechnology as well as astronomical observations. The other section was used as a docking compartment that would allow American space shuttles to visit the station. Kristall lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and docked with Mir 10 days later.

On May 25, 2008, NASA's Phoenix lander arrived on Mars.

Phoenix was NASA's sixth mission to successfully land on Mars, and it was the first mission to touch down near the planet's north pole. The objective for this mission was to look for evidence of water ice below the Martian surface. This would help scientists study the history of climate change on Mars. The mission would also look for clues about whether the Red Planet could have been habitable or even hosted some kind of alien life in the past. Phoenix spent almost 10 months flying to Mars before it plunged into the atmosphere going close to 13,000 miles per hour. Parachutes slowed it down to about 5 miles per hour, and Phoenix gently landed after a 7-minute descent. Three Mars orbiter missions adjusted their orbits so they could be in a good position to watch the landing. This was the first time that a spacecraft's landing on another planet was caught on camera.

On May 30, 1975, the European Space Agency officially opened for business.

The European Space Agency was created as a merger of the European Launcher Development Organization, or ELDO, and the European Space Research Organisation, ESRO. Both ELDO and ESRO were established in the 1960s to unify the space-related activities of European nations. After World War II, a lot of European rocket scientists left to work in the United States. This made it difficult for small countries in Europe to compete with the space programs of the U.S. and the Soviet Union, which were the two big superpowers in the world of spaceflight. So, the Europeans united to create ELDO and ESRO. ELDO handled launch operations while ESRO handled the science. In 1975, they decided to unite those two organizations as well. The European Space Agency was officially founded with the signing of the ESA Convention on May 30, 1975, and the agency began operations the next day.

On June 1, 2011, NASA's space shuttle Endeavor touched down safely for the final time at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida after spending 299 days in space throughout the course of its 25 flights.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for the shuttle Challenger, which was lost in the 1986 accident that also killed its seven-astronaut crew. Congress authorized the construction of Endeavour in 1987, and the orbiter first blasted off in 1992. Its final launch occurred on May 16, 2011, sending a six-member crew into orbit on NASA's STS-134 mission. This last mission delivered the Express Logistics Carrier-3 and the $1.1 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station. Endeavour had many successful missions during its run, one of the most famous being the start of construction on the ISS. The 1998 mission took the U.S. Unity node, or the passageway that connects the working and living modules, to space and joined it to the Russian Zarya module, which was already in orbit. This attachment led to it becoming an international space station. Currently, Endeavour sits in the California Science Center in Los Angeles as a year-round exhibit.
